Why exercise and healthy food is so important to us
and our children?

Here are some startling statistics. Obesity among adults has doubled in the last 20 years. At least 1 child in 5 is overweight. Wow. Being overweight can contribute to so many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, depression. The list can go on and on. Not only does a healthy lifestyle combat our weight, but it fights to prevent future health problems. A child who consumes fibre, protein, vegetables, and fruit are able to concentrate better at school, get better grades, have more energy, and feel better about themselves. Add some exercise to that and their self esteem goes up, they feel energetic, and accomplish more.

How can I get my child to become more active?
The best way to motivate your child to exercise is to lead by example. You, the parent are your child’s best role model. Invite your children to join you or suggest an activity they might enjoy. Make family activities a regular event. It’s a great opportunity to spend time together as a family and be active at the same time.

What to do with a picky eater.
Usually every family has one. Maybe more. Vegetables and fruit are full of essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies need. Especially our growing children. If you have children that are particular about what they eat here are some ideas to get them to eat their veggies. Cut vegetables into very small pieces and add to stews or soups. Grate vegetables into thin strips and add to stir-frys and pasta. Experiment with different low fat dips for dipping. Be creative. Even if your child refuses to eat, continue to offer these choices. Slowly your child will get used to the taste and begin to enjoy eating vegetables.

If you have any more helpful ideas or a question you’d like to ask, post it on our forum.
